What is AePS?
The Aadhaar Enabled Payment System, commonly called AePS, is a bank-led payment service operated through an interoperable network. It allows an eligible customer to access selected banking services at an authorised touchpoint by using Aadhaar-based authentication.
According to the National Payments Corporation of India, AePS may support services such as cash withdrawal, cash deposit, balance enquiry, mini statement and Aadhaar-to-Aadhaar fund transfer, subject to the services enabled by the customer's bank and the acquiring institution.
What information is used?
For a typical AePS transaction, the customer may be asked to select the bank, enter or provide the Aadhaar number or Virtual ID where supported, choose the transaction type and amount, and authenticate through an approved method. The transaction should be performed only after the customer understands and agrees to the request.
The operator should never use a customer's authentication for a different transaction or amount. Customers should be able to see or hear the details before authentication and should receive a transaction result afterwards.
Before you authenticate
Take a few seconds to check the following:
- Is the outlet or representative authorised to provide the service?
- Is the correct bank selected?
- Is the transaction type correct—for example, withdrawal rather than balance enquiry?
- Is the amount correct?
- Has the operator explained any permitted charge?
- Is your registered mobile phone available to receive a bank alert?
If anything is unclear, stop and ask for an explanation. Biometric authentication acts as consent and should not be given merely because an operator asks for it.
After the transaction
Collect the printed or digital receipt and check the status, amount and reference number. Count any cash before leaving. Compare the receipt with the SMS sent by the bank, where available.
If the device shows a failed transaction but your account is debited, do not repeat the transaction immediately without checking. Preserve the receipt and message, note the outlet details and contact the bank through its official helpline, branch or complaint channel.
Protecting your identity and account
- Do not allow anyone to photograph or retain an unnecessary copy of your Aadhaar document.
- Do not announce or display your full Aadhaar number in a crowded place when a safer alternative is available.
- Never share an ATM PIN, mobile-banking PIN, password or one-time password for an AePS transaction.
- Do not provide biometric authentication for a blank, unexplained or unrelated request.
- Avoid using an outlet where the operator refuses to provide a receipt or explain the transaction.
- Report suspicious activity quickly to the bank and the appropriate authorities.
AePS does not require a customer to reveal secret banking credentials such as an ATM PIN or internet-banking password. Anyone requesting such information should be treated with caution.
Making AePS useful and safe
AePS can be valuable for customers who live far from a branch or need assisted banking. Its convenience depends on informed consent, transparent service and careful verification. Customers should use authorised points, understand each request and retain proof of the transaction.
